Unite to abide by employment law over potential tanker drivers’ strike
Posted 19/04/2012
Unite has confirmed fuel tanker drivers will abide by employment law if they launch strike action as a result of a new breakdown in talks with employers. No agreement has been reached with the UK’s six leading oil distribution firms and Unite – which is representing 1,200 members of staff – in the dispute.Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland stated the union is committed to reaching “a negotiated settlement that brings stability and security to a vital industry”.She added operators have been presiding over under-cutting and the erosion of standards for too long and it is time this was brought to an end.Ms Holland said there has been some progress in the talks between Unite and the fuel distribution companies, but members are looking for more guarantees about safety standards.Unite represents workers in all types of industries, with as many as 1.5 million people all over the country supported by the organisation.Posted by Ross Strowger
