Pensions law changes ‘unfair on certain women’
Posted 07/07/2011
Changes to employment law regarding pensions are unfair on a particular group of women, it has been suggested.
Dr Ros Altmann claimed the government has gone back on its promise to deliver “transition arrangements” to “mitigate the unfairness” caused by the pensions bill.
She said that although it is right to raise the age at which people can retire from their jobs, a particular group of women are having to “bear the brunt” of the change.
Dr Altmann pointed out that females in their late 50s will face a significant rise in their pension age but have not been given an adequate amount of time to prepare for this.
“How can we expect people to make long-term plans for their pensions if the goalposts are moved by the government at such short notice?” the expert concluded.
At the end of last month, Dr Altmann stated that the pensions bill could be illegal and the government may struggle to defend itself against some cases in court.
