An 82-year-old from Bath who is suffering from mesothelioma and has just months to live has been awarded £115,000 from his former employer.

Bernard Mottram worked for BT in the 1990s at a 35-acre underground complex in Corsham that had been equipped during the Cold War to be resilient to nuclear attack, BBC News reports.

He claims that during his time working for the company there was never any mention of asbestos or the possibility of industrial disease and this is why he has made the personal injury claim.

A statement from the firm read: “For the purpose of this case BT has agreed to make a compensation payment to Mr Mottram in respect of his mesothelioma.”

However, BT strongly noted it did not admit liability for Mr Mottram’s condition.

According to estimations by the Health and Safety Executive, there are approximately 4,000 asbestos-related deaths in the UK each year.
