Lecturers to strike over redundancy

A redundancy plan at a college in the south of England has led to lecturers planning to go on strike.National Union of Teachers (NUT) members employed at Sussex Downs College voted in favour of taking strike action, while the results of a poll of University and College Union members from the facility will be announced soon.According to a report by BBC News, strike action could take place in a matter of weeks.NUT regional officer Nick Childs called for more talks regarding redundancy to take place before any strike action.College spokesman Andy Waters pointed out exam time is coming up and stated he hopes the lecturers respect this.It has been argued by Sussex Downs College that it needs to make savings as a result of a cut in funding from the government.Last month, a protest against redundancy plans for school staff in east Lancashire was launched, while Blackburn with Darwen’s Council was accused of “careless cynicism” by teacher Peter Rush, reported the Lancashire Telegraph.Posted by Ross Strowger
