Latest research on anti-coagulant drugs

A study has been carried out by researchers at the University of Nottingham comparing newer anticoagulants for people with and without atrial fibrillation against those who take warfarin.

Researchers used data from people who had been newly prescribed one of the anti-coagulant drugs between 2011 and 2016 and recording the outcomes including bleeding that led to hospital admission.

Of the people data was taken from, half who were taking anticoagulants were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, while half took them for other reasons, such as histories of blood clotting. The researchers said the study “showed a decreased risk of major bleeding events associated with the use of apixaban compared with warfarin in both patients with atrial fibrillation and without atrial fibrillation.”

Although this study adds to evidence that the anticoagulant drug apixaban may cause few bleeding episodes and prevent more DVT than warfarin, the study does have its limitations. It must be remembered that of those who were studied, it is not clear if the medication was took as prescribed and it is not clear why half of the people in the study were prescribed anticoagulants.

Kate Smith, a solicitor in the Medical Negligence team at Ashtons Legal, comments: “Although a very interesting study, it still leaves us without complete clarity about the benefits and effectiveness in all circumstances of newer anticoagulant drugs as compared to warfarin. Studies such as these will hopefully continue to develop our understanding of anticoagulant drugs, both newer and more commonly used warfarin to better recognise when and for whom they should be prescribed. Those who are prescribed and taking anticoagulant drugs should not stop taking their medication if it is working for them and should always seek advice from their GP.”
