Inquest into death of a Cambridge woman, who died whilst an inpatient at Fulbourn Hospital
The inquest is taking place this week at Huntingdon Town Hall into the death of a Cambridge woman, Hannah Allum, who took her own life whilst in a mental hospital.
Sharon Allison, a medical negligence specialist at Ashtons Legal, is the Allum family’s lawyer.
Hannah Allum, aged 29, was a bright student who achieved well academically and secured a place in Cambridge to study natural sciences. She joined Robinson College in 2009. However, sadly could not continue after her first term due to mental health difficulties. Over the years, she had various input from inpatient and community mental health services. Hannah’s mental health deteriorated to the point that she had a number of admissions to Fulbourn Hospital, mainly following attempts to take her life. She was re-admitted to the ward on the 5 December 2015 and shortly thereafter was transferred to their rehabilitation ward. At this stage, Hannah‘s mother was very concerned about her daughter’s mental health. On 21 January 2016, Hannah was found dead in her hospital room.
Sharon Allison comments: “It will be up to the coroner to decide what exactly took place at Fulbourn Hospital and how Hannah died. Her mother has strong views about how Hannah died, and the death of her daughter has had a catastrophic effect on her own health. It would however be improper to give voice to those concerns before the coroner has conducted a thorough investigation into Hannah’s death.”
