A number of compensation claims have been launched against tour operator First Choice amid claims that one of its hotels caused an outbreak of stomach bugs.

Nearly 700 people are suing the firm after staying at the Holiday Village Hotel in the Turkish resort of Sarigerme and falling ill between April and October 2008, according to reports in the South Yorkshire Star.

It is alleged that poor hygiene there led to many holidaymakers developing C difficile, gastroenteritis or salmonella.

One woman named Lyndsey Morris, whose husband became so ill he had to be put on a drip, said First Choice staff did not do enough to help their customers.

She added: “It was a hell hole but they were just not doing anything about it. There were angry scenes in reception every day.”

A First Choice representative insisted that all of the properties used by the company are safe and asserted that it has acted in good faith throughout.

Last month, a British couple revealed they would be suing a London-based tour operator after being attacked by armed robbers while on holiday.
