Firms ‘must heed employment law to avoid compensation claims’

Companies have been reminded of the need to ensure they adhere to employment law when making dismissals in order to avoid facing compensation claims.
Human resources advisory group Think Resources has reminded employers that an increasing number of unfair dismissal claims have been made in the last year.
It advised that this is because workers have become more aware of their employment law rights, which many bosses are unknowingly violating by not following proper dismissal procedure.
The HR firm therefore reminded companies to ensure they have adhered to proper disciplinary, warning and consistency standards in order to avoid legal difficulties.
“You need to know why companies lose unfair dismissal cases … so that you can avoid the same pitfalls by making sure that you act fairly and consistently at all times,” it said.
Earlier this month, Employers’ Law magazine advised that legal procedure is equally important when laying workers off, as improperly-conducted redundancy can also lead to legal action.
