Harry Morrison, general manager at the Carbon Trust, said he believes the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme – formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment – will become legislation soon, as originally planned by the Labour government.
Pointing out that the scheme is a ‘key part’ of the coalition government’s agenda, he said it would be ‘prudent’ for business property owners to take control over their energy usage as soon as possible.
Ms Morrison said companies and landlords should have access to accurate energy consumption data, as it is an ‘essential part of having an effective CRC strategy’.
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme began on April 1st 2010 and is part of the UK’s strategy for improving energy efficiency, as set out in the Climate Change Act 2008.
It is hoped by the government that the UK will be able to to cut its emissions by 12.5 per cent below 1990 levels by 2012.
