Ashtons Legal’s good Will campaign

Many people are unaware of the implications of dying unexpectedly without a Will. The most common reasons people give for not making a Will are either that they haven’t ‘got round to it’ or that they feel they haven’t got anything of value to leave behind.

Just under two thirds of adults do not have a current Will. This means that, in households where there are children, formal guardianship arrangements will not be in place and children may not be brought up by people chosen by the parents. If you are part of an unmarried couple, your partner will not automatically be entitled to anything on your death if you haven’t made a Will.

Ashtons Legal is encouraging people to make 2014 the year they finally get round to making a Will. By making a Will during our Wills Week, you can benefit local charities at the same time.

The week long campaign will run from 24 – 28 February 2014 and will raise funds for three charities which have been nominated by Ashtons Legal staff: Macmillan Cancer Care, the emergency medical charity, Magpas, and Nelson’s Journey, which supports bereaved children and young people.

Alison Budge, partner at Ashtons Legal said: “The implications of not making a Will are that the law will decide how your estate will be distributed and who should care for your dependents. Having a Will in place avoids the confusion and emotional strain which can be placed on loved ones when someone has not made their wishes known.”

“As well as emphasising the importance of making a Will, our Wills Week campaign will raise vital funds for three worthwhile causes, making a lasting difference to the lives of local people.”
