Action mesothelioma Day service

Anglia Asbestos Diseases Support Group (AADSG) special ‘Action Mesothelioma Day’ service was attended by over 250 people in St. Edmundsbury Cathedral last Sunday (2 July 2017), including AADSG members, patients, carers, sponsors and volunteers from across the region.

The theme of the Sunday Eucharist was Reflection and Hope and was centred on Mesothelioma and Asbestos-related diseases. Frances, The Dean of St. Edmundsbury featured mesothelioma in her sermon and reflected on her own personal experiences of this terrible disease.  Young Choristers from New Haven Cathedral, Connecticut, U.S., were amongst the congregation and AADSG patients and carers formed the Offertory Procession. As sponsors of AADSG, an Ashtons Legal solicitor read a lesson.

Following the special service, refreshments were served in the Refectory followed by a symbolic release of 12 white doves representing 12 AADSG friends and patients who were lost during the last year. The names of these friends from Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire were read during the ceremony. Poetry, speeches and music followed, lead by AADSG Suffolk Patron, Cllr. Patrick Chung, the former Lord Mayor of Bury St. Edmunds. Suffolk County Council and Forest Heath District Council were also represented. Mesothelioma UK Charitable Trust was represented by Ambassador Brian Wallis and an awareness stand was erected in the nave of the Cathedral where volunteers were on hand to answer questions from the congregation.

n a beautifully sunny afternoon in the ancient Cloister Garth, approximately 40 people were entertained with a Strawberry & Cream Tea, followed by a conducted tour of the Cathedral and Abbey ruins and the world-famous ornamental gardens.
