£300,000 obtained for lady following care home negligence

Julie Crossley, a medical injury specialist at Ashtons Legal, has obtained £300,000 for Mrs T, who lost her mobility as a result of negligent treatment in a care home.

Mrs T is an elderly lady who was living independently in a warden-controlled flat, in spite of mild multiple sclerosis, until she suffered a fall. Having been checked over in hospital she was admitted to a care home for rehabilitation. At this time she had a small blister on one heel and another sore patch at the base of her spine.

The care home didn’t do any skin assessments until the very end of the month by which time she had a substantial pressure ulcer on her heel and a larger one at the bottom of her spine. She was nursed in bed to assist with healing and lost the ability to move independently in the process.

Julie Crossley comments: “Mrs T was discharged from the care home just under a year later, still suffering from the pressure ulcer at the base of her spine. Since then she has needed help with all her daily activities. This settlement is enabling her to employ more private care, thereby accessing the wider community and being able to engage in social activities at home. It can never fully compensate for the avoidable loss of her mobility but goes some way to making her life easier and more enjoyable than it would otherwise have been.”
