Widow seeks husband’s former London work colleagues

  • Posted

Maria Cohen was widowed just before Christmas 2023 when her husband, Cyril, died after a short battle against mesothelioma. Maria is now hoping to make contact with some of Cyril’s work colleagues from the 1960s, which is when he is believed to have worked in one or more London businesses in which he was required to cut up asbestos blocks and was potentially also exposed to asbestos in other forms.

Mrs Cohen’s lawyer is Sylvia Phillips, a solicitor and asbestos-related disease specialist at Ashtons Legal. She explains:

“We are hoping to ascertain precisely when and where Cyril was exposed to asbestos. His tax records show that he was employed by H&D Engineering Co Ltd in the early 1960s and then by The Ormond Engineering Co Ltd. Cyril talked about cutting blocks whilst working as an engineer. We are therefore asking anyone who worked in either of these two businesses during this period to come forward if they have a memory of working with Cyril and/or working with asbestos. We believe Cyril also worked for Marconi in Chelmsford at some stage, having previously spent a short period in the army as a Mechanical Engineer.

“In the 1970s, he went on to run his own business, C&A Engineering, in Stoke Newington. He also had a business called Kingfisher Darts, but neither of these are believed to have involved asbestos. Later on, he also undertook sales and driving jobs with various double-glazing companies.

“We are hoping that the photographs may jog someone’s memory and they may be able to help us piece together Cyril’s full work history and possible asbestos exposure in the 1960s.”
