Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month 2023
September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, and its aim is to highlight some of the symptoms and types of gynaecological cancer.
There are several types of gynaecological cancer, including ovarian, cervical and vulval; all can display an array of symptoms ranging from bleeding, bloating, constipation and pain. As with anything health concern, if something is new or doesn’t seem normal for you, it is important to see your GP for help and advice.
Three young women have shared their symptoms, diagnosis and treatments to raise awareness of the signs of gynaecological cancers and reassure those in similar situations; these can be viewed here: https://www.royalmarsden.nhs.uk/your-care/cancer-types/gynaecological/gynaecological-cancer-awareness
These anecdotal stories are invaluable in shedding light and providing assurance during what can be a worrying time in a person’s life.
The outlook for gynaecological cancers varies depending on age, the type of cancer and your overall health, and there are a variety of treatment options that depend on various factors. Options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. With treatments constantly advancing, generally, the prognosis for gynaecological cancer is improving, but there is still progress to be made in ensuring early diagnosis and timely access to optimum treatment.
