Countess of Chester Hospital “requires improvement” says CQC
The Care Quality Commission has raised concerns that the Countess of Chester Hospital is operated with ‘significant risk’ in relation to its emergency care setting.
The inspection, which was done in October and November 2023, concluded that whilst there had been some improvements, “concerns remained”.
Issues identified were patients having difficulty accessing the correct services when needed or prompt care not being provided. There were also problems with sufficient staffing with appropriate training and poorly managed infection prevention and control policies.
This is not an isolated concern, with several hospitals under the umbrella of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust having their ratings lowered and the Trust now rated as “requiring improvement”.
CQC reports are awaited regarding further hospitals investigated, and with initial ‘serious concerns’ being reported at Wye Valley NHS Trust, specifically their accident and emergency department at Hereford County Hospital, concerns about patient safety and timely treatment are at the forefront.
