Compensation settlement obtained for Norfolk mesothelioma sufferer

  • Posted

Ashtons Legal has obtained a substantial financial compensation settlement for the estate of a man who sadly died having lost his battle with mesothelioma.

Mr M was a carpenter who was, like many tradesmen, regularly exposed to asbestos in the course of his work using asbestolux in the 1960s and 1970s.  As soon as he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, he set about trying to raise awareness of the disease, fearing that many older buildings still contain asbestos and younger tradespeople may not be familiar with it or where it will be found.

His lawyer comments: “Mr M’s claim was slightly unusual in that his illness, and untimely death in his 60s, left his long term partner with whom he had been living for many years, at a financial disadvantage. The solicitors defending the claim initially refused to accept that any provision needed to be made for Mr M’s partner but did eventually recognise her right as his long-term cohabitee and financial dependent.

I believe it is vitally important in 2020 that the rights of couples who choose to live together are more widely recognised. Sadly there is still a long way to go to harmonise the law for unmarried couples but this is a step in the right direction.
