Cancer Prevention Action Week: 17-23 February 2025
The World Cancer Research Fund charity is running its annual Cancer Prevention Action Week from 17-23 February 2025 to raise public awareness of cancer and cancer prevention.
The four most common cancers in the UK are breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and bowel cancer, with cases noted to have shown an overall rise of 5% in 2024 (approximately 950 people a day being diagnosed).
The recent news from the government that over two million extra NHS appointments have been provided over the last year shows that there are still significant waiting lists for assessment and treatment.
Cancer Prevent Action Week encourages people to implement consistent and manageable changes in their lives, such as raising activity levels, swapping out ultra-processed food in their diet, and reducing alcohol intake. Their ‘Cancer Prevention Recommendations‘ are intended to support the public in reducing their cancer risk.
Recommendations such as being a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, limiting ultra-processed foods and alcohol consumption, reducing or stopping smoking and being safe while in the sun are all scientifically shown to drop cancer cases by up to 40%.
For 2025, the theme is #MakeYourMove, promoting increasing exercise levels in a variety of ways, including staying active at home and in the office, together with fundraising challenges such as ultra walking challenges and links to the NHS Couch to 5k app.
