£15,000 obtained after hospital’s negligence resulted in man needing to undergo surgery
Mr T went to his local hospital having twisted his knee while playing sport.
He was unable to put weight on it and was experiencing tingling sensations in his lower leg. Doctors determined that he had suffered damage to the ligaments in his knee and thought that the tingling was the result of a closed nerve injury. His x-ray showed no sign of bone fracture so he was discharged with pain relief and asked to return the following day to the Fracture Clinic. He went on to have an MRI scan of his knee the following day, but there was a delay of several days before this was reported.
During this time Mr T said that his foot felt cold and numb and also had reduced movement so he returned to A&E for further assessment. He was also still unable to bear weight on this leg. A clinical examination revealed that there was a vascular problem, impeding his circulation. Mr T had to undergo surgery in order to treat this problem, which would not have been the case if he had been correctly diagnosed and treated earlier.
Julie Crossley, a medical negligence claim specialist at Ashtons Legal, handled Mr T’s claim. She comments: “Unfortunately Mr T has also been left with a dropped foot and has had to rethink his career choice as a result. However, a medical expert said that his dropped foot was as a result of the original injury and so we were only able to claim for the fact that the delay resulted in Mr T having to undergo surgery under general anaesthetic.”
