Spotlight On… Natalie Cosgrove

Our next spotlight is on Natalie Cosgrove, a Partner in our Medical Negligence team.

Natalie Cosgrove - Medical Negligence solicitor

What is your role at Ashtons?

Partner in Medical Negligence, Leeds.

How long have you been at the firm?

Two years.

Where have you worked previously?

I went the long way round! I completed my BVC in Manchester and then spent some time volunteering in South Africa, Manchester and then Sheffield whilst applying for Human Rights Pupilages, exclusively. That didn’t work out, so I went to work in-house at Citizens Advice after volunteering there. It was fast and frantic and taught me an awful lot.

I supplemented my income by working in gyms and didn’t actually stop teaching fitness until Covid hit. In my spare evenings I worked producing chronologies for a company, again to supplement my income. I also wanted to keep as busy as possible, as I thought if I went back to the Bar, then it wouldn’t be a lifestyle choice. The owner of the business asked me if I would join her as an NQ, and I cross-qualified. We worked out of her house for a few years as we built the law firm Medical Solicitors.

I left to gain more advocacy experience as that’s where my passion lay, and joined Keeble Hawson (now Knights), and then I was TUPE transferred to Switalskis where I worked my way up to Director (Partner) and then I joined Ashtons.

Who is in your team?

Bethany Kyle and Amelia Dale.

Do you have any specialisms?

I am known for my work in maternity, but I also specialise in causa equina (full or partial paralysis emanating from the lower back) and also amputation cases relating to sepsis. I had sepsis as a child and was very poorly.

Did you ever consider a different career?

I originally wanted to study fashion journalism at Central St Martin’s, but watching a friend’s Dad work as a barrister changed my mind. The Bar career didn’t work out, but I always said that if I couldn’t do that, I would try and be the best that I could possibly be in whatever I do.

If you could give your younger self some career advice, what would it be?

Chill – it will come in time! Get as much experience as you can before you take a leap. Say yes to everything, as you will work it out as you go along. Bad days don’t define you; they are lessons. Good days should be celebrated; they are the rewards of the lessons you took.
